Anime review: A Sign of Affection

Recently, I ran out of things to watch on Crunchyroll.  I decided to doom scroll on TikTok to waste time or see if an idea would come my way about what to watch or read.  I happened to see a post about an anime that seemed quick and simple.  This anime is only twelve episodes long and has a cute story without a lot of typical drama that gets in the way.  The name of the anime is A Sign of Affection.

This anime is so very different than most modern anime.  It’s not a proper slow burn.  The main characters admit that they like each other almost from the start.  It’s a refreshing take.  I liked this anime because it shines a light on people with special needs in Japan.  Yuki was born deaf, so the way she views the world is different from most people around her.  Itsuomi also views the world differently; he’s a born globetrotter and travels whenever he can.  After a chance meeting on a train, the two are drawn to each other.  Itsuomi goes out of his way to show that he deeply cares for Yuki.

The way that they handle bumps in the road and even rivals.  The two work together to show that they can coexist.  They encourage each other and work to show support for each other’s struggles.  I loved this series so much that I have started to buy the manga.  Besides some of the usual bumps that people face when they get into a new relationship, this is just a good slice of life story.  I want more stories like this to be available in the US.  It’s not depressing, not violent, and the characters are not creepy.  While stories that fit into that category are everywhere, some of which I love, this was just a nice, relaxing story.
