Book Review: Behind Closed Doors by Shain Rose

So, I recently stepped out of my norm. I had preordered a book and decided to read it while it was still new, skipping the books in my “to be read” pile. I have decided to try to read new authors and newer books. The books I have been reviewing have been out for a while, in some cases, years. I am making an effort to research new releases. Today’s book review will be the first new-release read published this year. This week’s review is Behind Closed Doors by Shain Rose.

The story starts with Mia finishing her teaching for the day. She is outside with Franny, waiting for her father to pick her up. The school where Mia teaches is very exclusive and pays her enough to get a fresh start. She’s able to look past the bodyguards the children need, because the pay for summer school is amazing. Mia loves teaching and her students. Today is different. After an attack at the school, Mia is forced by Jameson, Franny’s dad, to stay at their home for her safety. Instantly, there is tension because you cannot just tell a person they are going to live at a random house for the summer.

While Jameson has noticed Mia, he has put her out of his mind. His work is dangerous, and he can’t afford entanglements. Mia, however, doesn’t care that he is important or that he is a very dangerous man. Like moths to a flame, they are attracted to each other. At a point in Jameson’s story, it becomes clear he cares very strongly for Mia, but he gets in his own way. With trying to figure out who attacked his daughter’s school and keep Mia and Franny protected, he has a lot on his hands. The slow-burn romance between Jameson and Mia is so deliciously good.

The characters in this book made me want to look up the author’s other books. I really want to know Olive and Pink’s story. I love how this story flowed. At no point in this book did I feel like Mia was the weak female of the story. I will say that most of the women in this book were strong in their own ways. It continues a trend I am seeing of female protagonists being strong in their own ways without being overpowering.
