Book Review: The Mirror Book 2 of the Lost Bride Series by Nora Roberts

The book starts almost exactly where Inheritance ends. Owen and Sonya have walked through the mirror to attend Elizabeth Poole’s wedding. There, they see that Elizabeth is dancing at her wedding but are helpless to stop the events that will take her life. When the witch Hester Dobbs realizes that Owen and Sonya are standing there, trying to stop her. Hester uses her power to force Sonya to back down.

After this event, Sonya and her friends decide to do more research into the house and the Poole family. The primary focus is on Sonya‘s biological great-grandmother. What led her to force the twins, Collin and Sonya’s dad, apart? They find proof that Sonya’s great-grandmother (Patricia Poole) had definitely been in the manor. But after she got engaged, she never set foot in the house and completely closed the house off until her son. The house only reopened when Patricia’s son, Charles, went there with his wife, Lillian, also known as Clover.  Clover plays a part in the hauntings at the house.  Her presence is constant throughout the book.

One of my favorite scenes in this book is when Sonya and Cleo’s family come for an open house, and the ladies are throwing a party at the manor.  The family has their own way of dealing with the ghost.  The most moving moment for me is when Sonya’s paternal grandmother (her father’s adoptive mother) takes the time to thank Clover for giving birth to her son.  It was a wonderfully sweet moment.

One thing the group realizes is that Hester feeds on fear and grief.  This is one of the reasons that they decided to do an open house.  The manor’s many spiritual residents have a wonderful time.  Some even went as far as to be seen by some of the visiting family.  Having this much positive energy makes it hard for Hester to show herself.  The lost brides of the manor continue to share their story, and their heartbreak.  This book ends with a cliffhanger, no surprise there, that makes you think that something big is going to happen in the next book.  😉
