This week’s review is the second book in the Ruinous Love Trilogy, “ Leather and Lark” by Brynne Weaver. This follows “Butcher and Blackbird” as a non-traditional love story. Over the past few years, there has been a change in how the antagonists are portrayed in romance novels. It’s not easy to say who the good guy is and who the bad guy is (I think it’s called an anti-hero). This story was very entertaining. Characters from the first book return for a nice callback.

The story takes place a little after the events in Butcher and Blackbeard. The main character is the older Kane brother, Lachlan, and indie artist Lark Montague. Both are hiding secrets that are not for the weak-hearted. Oddly enough, they meet so that their secrets are out for the other to see. When they meet again at a holiday party, they don’t recognize each other, but know there is an attraction to the other person.
Seeing how this is a Brynne Weaver story, it’s not that simple. Lachlan is a contract killer. And sweet independent artist Lark? A serial killer. Due to family issues and being hunted, they have a marriage of convenience. This just makes it easier for the tension to build between the two killers. Like most marriages of convenience troupes, they don’t talk to each other about how they really feel until it is almost too late.
This was a fun book to read. While it didn’t really have any shocking food scenes—at least not to me—it was a good story with a lot of humor, and the humor is what brings me back. The story and the smut are good, but being able to make it where we are cheering on serial killers is true talent.
