Recently, something has brought the world together — it’s not politics, trauma, or anything else super depressing, for once. Nope, it’s an animated cartoon on Netflix called K-pop Demon Hunters. It is currently one of the most talked-about movies at the moment. Everything from the music to the character design was meant to catch the viewer’s eye. The hold that this movie has on the masses is something that needs to be studied.

When I first heard of K-pop Demon Hunters (KDH), everything about it made me think this was a kids’ movie.  The overly bright colors, the poppy music, it was easy to make that assumption.  Usually, this would mean that I would not watch, or it wouldn’t be something that I would search out.  That changed recently thanks to a girls’ trip to Nashville.   During some downtime, one of my friends put it on. Thanks, Michelle and Mia. What happened next made me a fan.  You have four grown women sitting in a room, enthralled by a movie about a female K-pop group using their voices to defeat demons.   It’s easy to see why this movie has become a sensation.

K-pop Demon Hunters was put out by the same studio that made the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movies, Sony Pictures Animation.  If anyone from Sony is reading this, my friend Jordan does not like that the new Spider-verse movie got pushed back for this movie.  I just thought I’d put that in for them. The Spider-verse films are, for me, the most popular movies that they have put out until KDH. That being said, it should not have surprised me that this movie was so good.  Sony has recently shown some insightful storylines, dealing with things that are under the surface, but everyone feels.  Feeling acceptance, loss, and finding your family, whether it’s blood or chosen.

Something else that KDH has done is become the No. 1 girl band on the Billboard charts.  Something that hasn’t been done in twenty-five years by Destiny’s Child.  This shows you how much of a hold the music has on America and the world. I’ve seen different K-pop groups perform songs from the movie.  I love seeing something like this bringing people together. To no one’s surprise, it has been confirmed that there will be two sequels.  I am excited to see where this series will go.
