This week’s book review is another that I have seen on many book lists. The reviews were promising, so I decided to give it a try. This week’s book is The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston. It is a love story with time-travel elements. The story was charming without being overly gimmicky.

Clementine West is going through a rough time. Her favorite person, her aunt, has passed. As part of her inheritance, her aunt left her apartment. While growing up, Clementine would spend summers with her aunt in New York. She always felt that what her aunt told her, that the apartment was magic, was true. As a jaded book publicist, she doubts everything her aunt says. She is having a difficult time moving forward. The apartment looks like her aunt is still living there. One day, she walks in, and a stranger is standing in the kitchen. Oddly enough, that’s not the crazy part. Somehow, the apartment sent her 7 years into the past.
This book was very touching. As someone who struggles with grief, I can imagine what Clementine went through. Coming to terms with the loss and coming to an understanding that she has had feelings for someone for seven years in the past is a lot. It was handled seamlessly. I was worried that a book dealing with time travel might be too gimmicky. The author made it seem like it was entirely possible that an apartment smack dab in the middle of New York could time travel.
While there wasn’t much smut in this book, I found it quite entertaining. By the end of the book, I felt that everything was connected. Even though it didn’t seem like that in the beginning, all in all, I would recommend this book. It was a very light-hearted read, and you could tell that the female antagonist had to work through her issues. The male antagonist, while important to the story, doesn’t seem like a big part of the healing that Clementine has to do. Don’t get me wrong, he is essential to the story, but even he knows she has to work through this independently.
