Georgia Renaissance: Fall Fling

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of going to the Georgia Renaissance Fall Fling.  This was the first year that the fairgrounds were opened during the fall.  Usually, the Ren Faire is held during the summer months.  For those not familiar with Georgia, it gets HOT during the summer.  The last time I went to the summer fair, I almost got a heat stroke.  The Fall Fling was a welcome change.  It was the perfect fall day, not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was nice and crisp.  There were some differences between the two festivals; one main difference is that the Fall Fling deals with Robin Hood.  The summer Ren Faire takes you to a jousting tournament during medieval times.  Another thing that was pointed out to me was that only half of the fairground was open.  Since this was the first year, it makes sense; it is a testing-the-waters situation.

Walking into the fairgrounds was almost like walking into a convention.  You see all types of people there.  People dressed up in costumes, cultural clothing, or just everyday clothing.  While in line to go in, I made conversation with the people in line easy. Usually, I wouldn’t say I like talking to random people.  Ren fair and conventions (i.e., Momocon, Dragoncon), it’s easy to talk to people because our interests are very similar.  Once inside, My friends and I went to see several shows. I felt like a little kid; everything was so exciting.

My favorite thing at the Fall Fling was the food.  The one thing I didn’t get a picture of, but that was my favorite, which was sausage on a stick.  By the time I got it, I was starving.  IT was so good. The baked potato and brisket sandwich were delicious as well.  The mac and cheese was meh.  Another was the mead from Monks Mead.  I had the Fairy Dew, made with lavender honey, butterfly pea flowers, and a hint of citrus.  It was excellent.  I might have to go to the Monks Mead Tasting room to get more.

I hope they bring the Fall Fling back next year with a few changes.  One of the things that I would have loved was hot chocolate or hot apple cider. There were some glitches as well.  We went to see the cast act out part of the Robin Hood story; there were no microphones, and the theater was packed.  Unfortunately, I heard the drunk fairgoer better than the actors.  Besides that, it was a good time.  I hope that more of the fairgrounds will be open next year and have more vendors.
