Book Review: Bride by Ali Hazelwood

This week’s book review is Bride by Ali Hazelwood, which I saw on everyone’s favorite list. People had it as one of their top books of the year. I was excited for the chance to read it, and it was by a new (to me) author. While I didn’t hate it, it was not in my top book pile.

Humans, Weres, and Vampyre (author spelling) have had tense relationships for centuries.   Neither side trusted the other. To help build trust, the Vampyres do what they call a collateral arrangement.  They send the child of a powerful Vampyre to the humans, and the humans will do the same.  Due to this arrangement, Misery is an outsider among the Vampyre.  Despite her need for blood and avoiding sunlight, she is more comfortable with humans.  Now an adult living her life, she is called again to serve as a representative.  Except this time, she will be getting married to the Were alpha.

This story follows Misery and Loew as they try to figure out their situation and make the best of it. While trying to get used to each other, outside forces try to pull them apart. Trying to navigate the problems that are coming their way brings them closer. Working together to find the cause of the plot to wreak havoc on their lives opens the door to a bigger issue.

This was a good book, but like I said earlier, there are better ones. There were points where it felt that the story lagged. There were moments where you could tell the author was making Misery have a warped sense of humor. The parts where Misery was funny were at the end of the book. I would recommend the book. I would also add the caveat that it’s not my cup of tea.
