There is an episode of “The Simpsons” where Homer becomes a food critic. After a while, he is pulled to the side by other critics because he does have a bad review. [1] This was how I started to feel about the books I reviewed. I liked them all. That is until now. This book has the honor of being the first book that I could not finish this year. The book is Game of Fate by Scarlett St. Clair.

In a previous book review, I wrote that I love Hades and Persephone retellings. This book is the exception to the rule. One of the issues was it took a lot of work to place where the book took place in time. The Gods are millions of years old, and it felt like they were dropped in the present day. In this retelling, Hades knows almost from the beginning that Persephone is to be his queen. Knowing this, the author has decided that the long game was the way to go. I was waiting for the story to pick up and go. I felt like I was watching a chess game. I know nothing about chess.
I was on the fence about finishing the book, decided to check out the author. I found that this book is part of a series. It only deals with Hades and Persephone. I cannot do more books like this one. I am a firm believer that there is a book for everyone. This book was not for me, and it’s with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to not continue with the series.
