I come to you incredibly sore but very proud of myself. I spent Memorial weekend volunteering at Momocon. It got me out of the house and allowed me to meet more people. The convention was held at the Omni Hotel and Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC). Getting there was easy enough. I drove to the nearest Marta station, about 7 minutes. I was not prepared for the amount of walking I would be doing for the weekend.
On my first day, I walked over 13,000 steps. I felt every one of those jokers, too. It had to be at least a quarter to half a mile from entry to the dealer’s area. The first day was filled with me figuring out where to go and what to do. When I tell you I was all over the place, I was all over the place: back corridors, freight elevator, empty convention halls. There was so much to take in. I got to meet up with old friends and meet new ones. I am slightly drained, but seeing people’s creativity is always fun. The most exciting thing was being involved with the Guinness Book of World Records count for the most people dressed as Spider-Man. We didn’t make it this year. Being able to ask the auditor questions was pretty cool.
The area that I was most excited to visit was the dealer’s hall. I love walking around and seeing what people are selling. Most items you won’t see again. There were some things that I couldn’t even pass on. There were more things I had to ignore. In a perfect world, I would have a limitless credit card that I don’t have to make payments on. 😂 This was a good practice run for when I volunteered at Dragon Con.
I recommend volunteering at a convention if you like it. I can’t talk about other cons, but Momocon took good care of its volunteers. It was a wonderful community. You must put in the work, but it was worth it.
