When I was around twelve, my brother Jonathan (about eight) started to watch this cartoon on TV. The show was called Ronin Warriors, and it would be one of the things that would cause a significant shift in my life. Ronin Warriors was very different from anything else on the air then. Everything was so new, at least to me. The storyline was darker than any other cartoon at the time.

This show cracked the door open for the show that would make the same door explode. Sailor Moon was girl power, teamwork, and romance all in one. The young me could look over the things the older me would find jeering. I can remember it was my first time seeing cosplay. The TV station would have someone host in the Sailor Moon outfit. I was in awe. Sadly, cosplay is something that I have not done yet.

At this time in the 90’s, finding anime to watch was more challenging than it is today. There wasn’t a streaming service that I could join. I didn’t see another anime I liked until a random trip to Best Buy in the early 2000s. In the DVD section was a show that still has a gripe on me today, Fruits Basket. It was charming, cute, funny. There were some serious tones, but nothing too deep. The reason was that the manga was still ongoing while the show aired. This led to a common issue anime based on manga. End the series, or do filler episodes until there is enough source material. Fruits Basket (2001) only had one season. Now I knew where to get anime, or at least get an idea of which ones to research.

Over time, anime became more straightforward to find. Around this time, Netflix was doing DVDs at home. This was how I saw various other anime: Ouran Host Club, Card Captor Sakura, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and plenty more. This leads me to the current day. I have Crunchyroll streaming, which allows me to watch ALL OF THE ANIME. 😀 They help me pass the day and zone out for a bit. Two previously mentioned anime have been remade, Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket (2019). Now there are new favorites; Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, My Dress up Darling, Jujutsu Kaisen. The one show that is my current favorite is Demon Slayer. I don’t watch a lot of fighting/horror anime. Something about this show grabbed my attention, and I held on. It’s not romantic, nor is it something that I would show young children. Demon Slayer does have one of the best storylines in anime. Its manga run is over, and the show has 1-2 seasons left. On February 23, it is coming to theaters to show the last episode of season 3 and the first episode of season 4. I will be there.
